    MISSION AND CHAPTER HISTORY

The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 with the aim of creating an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens living in a democracy.  These ideals of scholarship, character, service, and leadership remain as relevant today as they were in 1921.

Worthington High School first established a National Honor Society Chapter in 1960.  In 1991, the inaugural year for opening the doors of Worthington Kilbourne High School, Principal Ron Porta worked and his faculty to establish a National Honor Society chapter. The WKHS faculty chose Dr. Arnold Skidmore, former Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, as the namesake of our NHS chapter.

Dr. Skidmore was a champion for students and public schools.  His belief that a compact existing between the community and the public school gave promise that for every child who passed through its doors would be taught- poor children, affluent children, children with disabilities and children who show great academic potential.  Dr. Skidmore understood that perhaps most importantly, students meet and sit side by side in classrooms, bleachers and in cafeterias. They learn from each other as surely as they learn from their teachers. Dr. Skidmore strongly believed that social learning in school was also what gave rise to the promise of social progress and social reform which supported the four ideals of NHS… Scholarship, Character, Leadership and Service.
