PANORAMA SURVEY
We thank you and your family for being our valued partners as we work together to educate the children in our district. As you may already be aware, building our well-being and social-emotional learning skills is an important goal for our school this year and every year. Over the next few weeks, students will participate in several exercises to better understand these concepts and to reflect on how they perceive these skills in themselves.
As we have done for the last four years, we will be asking for your child to reflect on his/her own mindsets and approaches to learning via an online survey. The survey shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes to complete and will be administered during a two-week window from March 11 - 22.
We are partnering with Panorama Education, a third-party vendor, to support us in administering these surveys. The survey content will ask students in grades 3-12 to self-reflect on School Safety, Teacher-Student Relationships, Sense of Belonging, Rigorous Expectations, and Self-Efficacy. Our students in grades 6-12 will also be asked to self-reflect on two additional topics; Diversity and Inclusion and Cultural Awareness.
Student voice matters to us, and their responses will provide invaluable insights into their experiences in how we can improve and adapt our instruction to meet their needs. If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to answer a question, they will be able to skip the item altogether.
If you have any questions about the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) survey, please don’t hesitate to contact us in the office at 614-450-5300.
TESTING
As we approach Spring Testing, please look for emails from your classroom teacher with specific dates.

April 8th – Eclipse
Ohio will experience a once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. In Worthington Schools, we have decided to CLOSE school for Monday, April 8th. Surrounding school districts, Columbus, Dublin, Olentangy, and Westerville have all previously announced that they will not have school. The concern on this day is the traffic expected in our region and the ability with that traffic to get students safely home from school. For more information regarding considerations for closing, superintendent Dr. Trent Bowers blog explains the decision in more detail.
Prior to the eclipse, each student will receive a pair of viewing glasses. We encourage families to discuss how to safely view the eclipse with your child. Information regarding safe viewing can be found HERE and can be useful in helping to discuss eclipse viewing safety with your child.
If you would like to explore the eclipse further with your child, the following resources are suggested.
-
TimeAndDate.com has a great interactive map to get details for any specific location.
-
NASA - Eclipse 2024 Activities
-
NSTA Eclipse resources

Weekly Update 3.1.24
March 1, 2024
Dear Brookside Families,
Have a great weekend!
READ ACROSS AMERICA!
Each year, Read Across America is celebrated from March 2-7. We encourage all Brooksiders to enjoy reading on these days! A log will be coming home with your student to capture minutes read each day and it is linked if you prefer to print your own: Read Across America Reading Log. Please return your reading log to your teachers on Thursday, March 7th. Every student who turns in their reading log will be rewarded and the top readers in each grade level will win a gift card! Happy Reading, Bobcats!

ECLIPSE - APRIL 8th
Here is the message from our Superintendent.
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce provided guidance to school districts to evaluate safety concerns. You can view that guidance here. For me, as Superintendent, my major concern is traffic and the ability to run buses. It’s an unknown, but a risk we’ve decided is too big to take.
The Total Solar Eclipse in Worthington will begin on Monday, April 8, at 1:55 pm and continue through 4:27 pm with a duration of 2 hours and 31 minutes.
LUNCH ACCOUNTS
Please check your student’s lunch account at My Payments Plus. We have several accounts that need additional funds. It might be necessary to reset your notifications for low balance reminders.

Today, your child was introduced to the Worthington Kilbourne High School band, choir, and orchestra at an assembly for fifth graders. In sixth grade at Perry Middle School, your child can begin their musical journey to be a part of these outstanding music ensembles! Can’t decide which ensemble is right for you? At Perry, you can participate in two music classes. Read the “Shared Student Expectations” here.

BROOKSIDE BASH
T-shirt forms went home last week. Please let us know if you were NOT able to return your form. Students will be working on the t-shirts in Art class for our end of year event.
PANORAMA
We thank you and your family for being our valued partners as we work together to educate the children in our district. As you may already be aware, building our well-being and social-emotional learning skills is an important goal for our school this year and every year. Over the next few weeks, students will participate in several exercises to better understand these concepts and to reflect on how they perceive these skills in themselves.
As we have done for the last several years, we will be asking for your child to reflect on his/her own mindsets and approaches to learning via an online survey. The survey shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes to complete and will be administered during a two-week window from March 20-31.
Additionally, our students in grades 6-12 will also be asked to self-reflect on two additional topics; Diversity and Inclusion and Cultural Awareness.
Student voice matters to us and their responses will provide invaluable insights into their experiences and how we can improve and adapt our instruction to meet their needs. If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to answer a question, they will be able to skip the item altogether.
If you have any questions about the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) survey, please don’t hesitate to contact us in the office at 614-450-5300.

Hello families,
It is with mixed emotions as I share this news with our families…..
It has been a joy to have our wonderful secretary, Angie VanHulle, at Brookside for the past 7.5 years. January 31 will be her last day with us as she begins her retirement adventures after 25 years of school secretary service. She has served our school community with love, laughter, and a steadfast commitment to others. We will miss her terribly but also share in her excitement as she will have more time to spend with family. Thankfully, we know we will see her again as she promises to visit and volunteer whenever possible. Thank you, Mrs. VanHulle and best wishes in retirement!
Our wonderful art teacher, Miss Murray, has created a way for you to see some of the artwork done in your child’s classroom. Please enjoy the links below to a Google Photo album of student artwork, organized by grade.

It has been a blast wrapping up the last week before break with Spirit Week!
We want to thank our wonderful PTA for stocking the lounge, providing a popcorn bar, and bringing in a baked potato bar for lunch. They take good care of staff and students, and we are thankful for all they do for our school community.
As we approach the close of yet another calendar year, the Brookside Elementary Staff wants to wish you and your family the very best during the Winter Holiday season. Spend time with those you love and let them know how much they are loved. Thank you for everything you do! It is lovely to partner with such wonderful families.
Winter recess begins December 22nd and ends January 4th, 2023. Students return to school on Thursday, January 5th. We can’t wait to see our precious students again.
Stay warm and stay safe!
Warmly,
Jenny Wielinski

Hello families,
Happy December! It’s hard to believe that we’re almost halfway through the school year.
As temperatures begin to dip, please be sure your child is dressed for the weather. We go outside often during the winter months.
The Giving Tree - Brookside has erected a Giving Tree in the front hallway. We decorated it with hats, gloves and scarves. We've already given out many items and are in need of more donations. If you are able, we need new hats, scarves and gloves. We appreciate your help.
Several organizations and businesses supported nearly 30 Brookside families for the Thanksgiving holiday by providing dinners. Thank you to The Whitney House Restaurant in Worthington and to Highlands Presbyterian Church on Smoky Row Road.
Also, thank you to Franklin County Deputy Laura Stahr for facilitating the DARE program for our fifth grade students. It culminated in graduation and a visit from several officers and the Sheriff, Dallas Baldwin.
Please note that unclaimed items in our lost and found will be donated to a local organization at the end of December. If your child is missing a jacket or coat, please have him/her check before winter recess. Thank you!
Winter recess begins December 22nd and ends January 4th, 2023. Students return to school on Thursday, January 5th.
Have a wonderful weekend with your family. Stay warm!!

Hello, Families,
As you are aware, Brookside students participated in a school-wide safety drill on Wednesday. This safety drill allowed our school to practice communication in the event of a true emergency. As a parent/guardian, you should have received notifications via email and text message at the beginning and end of the drill. If you did not receive either or both messages, please update your contact information in the Emergency Data Review section of the parent portal. Instructions can be found here: Emergency Data Review Instructions. Thank you.
On Tuesday from 9:30 - 10am, our 5th graders will be celebrating the completion of their drug and alcohol curriculum. As part of their ceremony, we expect a variety of law enforcement to be in attendance. Please don’t be concerned if you see number of law enforcement vehicles at Brookside during that time.
With the sudden colder weather, please be reminded that our students go out for recess anytime the outside temperature is at least 20 degrees (including windchill). Make sure your child(ren) comes dressed appropriately for these temps. Also, PLEASE put your child’s name inside his/her coat in case they misplace it at school. Thank you.
We will be setting up our Giving Tree again this year. The Giving Tree holds new donated mittens, gloves, hats, socks, etc. Students who need any of those items can take them from our Giving Tree. If you would like to donate, please send any of these items to Brookside. Thank you!
If your child arrives at school after the 7:40am bell rings and there are no longer staff members standing outside, the adult dropping off will need to come in with the child to sign in. Please do not send them in alone. Thank you
Holiday Help - this is our final call for families who may need assistance with gifts for their school aged children. Please notify us by noon on Monday (November 21st) by responding to this email. Thank you.
Finally, there is no school from November 23rd - 25th. We hope you are able to spend this extended time with your families and friends. Happy Thanksgiving.

-
November 23-25: Thanksgiving break - school.
IMPORTANT - SAFETY DRILL IN NOVEMBER:
Brookside will be participating in a school-wide safety drill on Wednesday, November 16th, at 9:00am. Students and staff will practice the Lock-out and Lock-down safety drills - two drills intended to keep students in classrooms during a suspected emergency and prevent all outside entrance into the school.
We realize that safety drills have the potential to create anxiety for students. Our goal will be to provide clear information in a caring manner and to conduct drills in a way that does not cause fear or anxiety for students. Prior to the drill, teachers will work with students in an age appropriate way to understand the difference between the two types of drills and to review expectations during each drill.
In addition, this safety drill will allow our school to practice communication in the event of a true emergency. As a parent/guardian, you can expect to receive notification on the day of the safety drill via email and text message at the onset of the drill and after it has concluded. Since this is occurring across all of our buildings, families with children in multiple schools will receive drill messages from each school. We apologize in advance for sending multiple messages, but we want to make sure all of our systems are working.
If you would like to confirm or correct a phone number or email address so you can receive notifications, please update your information in the Emergency Data Review section of the parent portal. Instructions can be found here: Emergency Data Review Instructions. Please update any information in advance of the scheduled drill.
Panorama Education Survey - Please read the following information about our Panorama Education Survey for Elementary (grades 3-5):
We thank you and your family for being our valued partners as we work together to educate the children in our district. As you may already be aware, building our well-being and social-emotional learning skills is an important goal for our school this year and every year. Over the next few weeks, students will participate in several exercises to better understand these concepts and to reflect on how they perceive these skills in themselves.
As we have done for the last several years, we will be asking for your child to reflect on his/her own mindsets and approaches to learning via an online survey. The survey shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes to complete and will be administered during a two-week window from November 7 - November 18, 2022.We are partnering with Panorama Education, a third-party vendor, to support us in administering these surveys. The survey content will ask students in grades 3-12 to self-reflect on School Safety, Teacher-Student Relationships, Sense of Belonging, Rigorous Expectations, and Self-Efficacy.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Notes from the Kitchen:
- Students are doing a great job with their PIN numbers - good job, everyone!
- Please remember that we are a nut free school and this includes ALL nuts and Nutella, (not just peanuts). Thank you!
- We are seeing several school lunches being thrown away at lunchtime. We always try to encourage students to eat at least some of their lunches but many are saying they don’t like the day’s selection. Can you please look at the online menu with your child - maybe for the whole week ahead and plan to pack a lunch on days your child doesn’t like the selections? We want our students to be fed and ready to learn! Thank you.

Greetings, Families!
It was wonderful to see so many of you at Curriculum Night on Wednesday. When parents and teachers are on the same page about standards and expectations, everyone benefits. We appreciate your support and all you do for your kids.
Just a reminder that there is no school on Monday, September 5th, in observance of Labor Day.
The PTA Mumkin Sale - online only - runs through Wednesday, September 14th. We can guarantee that you will not be disappointed with your mums. August 26, 2022
Greetings,
What a great week at Brookside as students ease into their new routines. We see quite a few kiddos still trying to adjust to the earlier start time. An earlier bedtime just might be the ticket. You can tell them the school wants them to go to bed earlier. 😊
Car/bus loop - please pull all the way around the loop as far as you can before dropping off your child. Thank you.
Please remind your child that if he/she packs a lunch, they should not ask for a school lunch when they enter the cafeteria. Quite a few students are doing that and we ran out of school lunches the other day. We appreciate your help with this.
Curriculum Night is next Wednesday, August 31st. There will be two identical sessions for those parents who have more than one child at Brookside - 6:30-7:10pm and 7:20-8:00pm. Teachers will review what students will be learning according to state standards, classroom routines and expectations. We hope to see you there!
Just prior to Curriculum Night, at 6:00 in the library, there will be a Title I “Parent Engagement” meeting. As a Title I school, we are looking for a small group of parents who can represent others regarding support services within our school. We will also discuss what it means for a school to receive Title I funding for a schoolwide program. There will be four meetings per year. These can be in collaboration with other family nights or on zoom. A flier is attached with the information.
Cub Scouts is beginning their recruitment process with an Orientation and Recruitment Night at Brookside on Tuesday, September 6th at 6:30. Leaders will be popping into the cafeteria during lunch to let the students know about their programs. Please see the attached flier for more information.
Finally, we want to encourage you to become a PTA member and help enhance the learning experience at Brookside. You can sign up using this link: Brookside PTA
Have a wonderful weekend with your family and friends.

8-19-22Hello, Brookside families,
We had a fantastic school year opening! Students and staff kicked off the first day with a tour of the building and related expectations. Watching them practice what they learned shows us they are good listeners! Thank you for all your hard work getting them prepared. We appreciate you.
-
Safety 1st - Car Loop:
-
Parents, when dropping your child off at school, pull all the way around the circle. We are trying to utilize the entire circle for a more efficient drop-off.
-
Please remain in your cars and have your child exit the car on the passenger/curb side.
-
Please make sure your child is ready to exit the car in a quick but safe manner.
-
Here’s what’s coming up at Brookside:
-
Marathon Milers: Want to run/walk around with your friends? Want to exercise while having fun and earn shoe tokens for goals that you meet? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need to join the Brookside Elementary Marathon Milers program using the link below. Our primary goal is to have fun while running/walking together as a group during lunch recess. All Brookside Elementary students are welcome to participate! We would love for you to discuss this opportunity with your child and ask for you to support him or her being committed to running or walking at least 1 lap (.25 miles) on each recess running day (Tuesdays and Thursdays this fall). Thank you for your support! Marathon Milers Registration
-
Curriculum Night for Parents & Guardians: Wednesday, August 31st, 6:30-7:10pm and 7:20-8pm (identical sessions) - Teachers will review what students will be learning according to state standards, classroom routines & expectations. We hope to see you there!
